چکیده

The recent success of multicast applications such as Internet teleconferencing tools and distributed simulation illustrates the tremendous potential of applications built upon wide-area multicast communication services. However, in order to fully realize this potential of these applications, many technical challenges must still be met. This paper presents the issues and potential solutions surrounding the development of reliable multicast services suitable for the Internet. The research objectives and accomplishments of ARPA-sponsored research at TASC in reliable multicast protocols are also presented.

High-Performance, Reliable Multicasting: Foundations for Future Internet Groupware Applications*

Network protocols that provide efficient, reliable, and totally-ordered message delivery to large numbers of users will be needed to support many future Internet applications. The Reliable Multicast Protocol (aMP) is implemented on top ofIP multicast [14] to facilitate reliable transfer of data for replicated databases and groupware applications that will emerge on the Internet over the next de...

A Survey on Multicast Routing Approaches in Wireless Mesh Networks

Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) which mediates the broadband Internet access, have been recently received many attentions by the researchers. In order to increase capacity in these networks, nodes are equipped with multiple radios tuned on multiple channels emerging multi radio multi-channel WMNs (MRMC WMNs). Therefore, a vital challenge that poses in MRMC WMNs is how to properly assign channels ...

IETF Criteria for Evaluating Reliable Multicast Transport and Application Protocols

This memo describes the procedures and criteria for reviewing reliable multicast protocols within the Transport Area (TSV) of the IETF. Within today’s Internet, important applications exist for a reliable multicast service. Some examples that are driving reliable multicast technology are collaborative workspaces (such as whiteboard), data and software distribution, and (more speculatively) web ...

A Practical Semantic Reliable Multicast Architecture

IP Multicast has been developed in the past few years to support multi-point communication in Internet. However, it is still hard for protocol designers to tackle the intrinsic heterogeneity of networks and end-systems. Moreover, in practical, current Internet is not fully multicast-enabled. In this paper, we present a practical semantic reliable multicast (PSRM) architecture for current Intern...

Performance Analysis of Reliable Multicast Mechanisms for Widely Spread Distributed Applications in the Internet

1. This work was supported by Ericsson Eurolab Abstract This paper compares Internet packet transmission times of different reliable multicast protocols for widely spread distributed applications. The analytical model takes realistic Internet delays into account and calculates the mean transmission time and its variance for individual receivers in a multicast group. The results of an example sc...
